Are You Killing Your Success?

I love this time of year when I can finally eat some of the
fresh vegetables from our garden. Not only do they taste
good, but they remind me that if I will do the right actions
at the right time, I will indeed reap a harvest. Since this
is the first year I have not KILLED MY GARDEN, I thought
I’d share what I’ve learned and how it relates to life,
sport and business.
Four Keys to Success (from the garden)
1. Start with the Harvest In Mind.
Wouldn’t it be dumb to plant cucumber seeds and expect
grapefruit? Yes. That would be fruitless.
The seed packets have pictures of the mature plant for a
reason. None of us would be inspired by pictures of the seeds.
We want to keep our desired results in mind. If you
have lost sight of what you are working towards, than step
back and get clear on the end. Then find out what
seeds you need to sow to get there. A man reaps what he
sows!
2. The Environment Matters
My garden could not have possibly grown in my ground the
way it began. The soil was rock hard with clay, would have
had no drainage, and the seeds would have died. Instead
my gardener came out and mixed in pounds and pounds of
sand and high quality soil so the seeds would be able to grow
and reach a place of harvest.
How is your environment? Are you surrounded by people and
things that support your dreams and desired results? If you
are in business, do you connect with people who are more
experienced than you?
Just as I needed to invest in a gardener, so you will get much
better results if you invest in a coach or a mastermind group
who will help you reach beyond your current level. If you
haven’t produced the results you want yet, your environment
may be partly to blame.
3. Protect against Predators
I have always thought the bunnies in my yard were the cutest
things ever – until I realized that they were eating all my lettuce!
Sometimes the predators that try to consume my harvest are
bugs or disease. It takes a watchful eye to recognize and protect
against such harvest killers. In fact, it takes my gardener to know
what to do against them. Other times however, the enemies look
soft, cuddly and harmless – those might be worse.
Have you ever fallen victim to a dream-killer? Watch out for
well meaning people that seem as cuddly as a bunny, but who
are out to make you stumble. Also guard your mind against
rotten doubt-filled thinking that is like a fungus or killer bug.
Guard your heart, against predators. Otherwise you may easily
wear yourself out for no harvest whatsoever.
4. take consistent actions for consistent results.
It is not enough to plant seeds one day and expect a harvest the
next. No. It takes diligence, care and specific action over a period
of time. In sales, it takes 7-10 contacts with a prospect before they
will be ready to buy, yet most sales people stop after one or two
contacts.
In sports or life, it takes consistent diligent practice and feedback
to internalize the best ways to perform under any pressure.
In life it takes consistent acts of kindness that matter to another
person to build a life long relationships.
Look back over times you have failed. Chances are you simply
failed to apply the law of consistency. Start now to do the little
things consistently – in a big way!
Sowing and reaping is a marvelous principal to get us where we need
to go. I hope you’ll enjoy a rich reward!
I also wish all my American Readers a Fabulous Independence Day
Weekend – and to you Canadians – light some fireworks for me too!
To the rest of my international readers I say, Every Day is
Independence Day when you are free to pursue your dreams.
So, whether your game is athletic, financial or personal, keep
playing to win it.
I’m in your corner,
