Steps to Success – In Memory of Zig Ziglar

by Gina Parris

I was saddened yesterday to hear of the death of motivational legend, Zig Ziglar. My first taste of personal development and motivation came from Mr. Ziglar when I was just in the seventh grade. My Dad gave me a copy of the instant classic, See You at The Top.  I’ve kept that book close by for decades now. Hopefully I have lived out at least some of the message.

That book had a memorable illustration of the Steps to Success.

I’ll quickly review them:

1. Self-Image: “You will never outperform the image you have of your self.”

2. Relationships: You must recognize the worth and ability of other people and effectively live and work with them.

3. Goals: Just as if you were building a house, a life needs to have a plan and a goal.

4. Attitude: “You attitude determines you altitude.”

5. Work: “You really ‘enjoy’ a price rather than ‘pay’ a price because the price of success is much lower than the price of failure.

6. Desire: You must also have a burning desire to excel.

When he was 81 years old Zig was asked what he has discovered recently about success. He said that more than ever he was aware of the importance of relationships in our lives.

He said that nearly 100% of our life is about relationships – either directly or indirectly.

In his book, See You at the Top, he pointed out that the biggest cause of diminished productivity on the job was problems with the marriage at home.  Even though it seems less people are married today than when he wrote those words, the essence is the same. Private pain affects public performance.

BIG SUCCESS TIP – Keep your marriage strong and healthy. Build the intimacy between you and your mate. By intimacy, I mean the closeness you both desire – physically, emotionally and spiritually. Stretch. Speak the “language” that means something to your spouse.

Zig lived with Passion. He certainly had no intention of dying at 82. He still thought he had so much work to do to reach more people with a positive message.

Success is actually the bi-product of a life well lived. In perhaps his most often quoted statement Zig reminds us,

“You can have everything you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.”

Research shows us that in the end, we all want the same things, love, joy and peace.

My prayers are with the Ziglar family as they mourn such a big loss, and my prayers are with you and me, that more than ever we will focus on helping people get what they truly want.

Let’s go for it!

I’m in your corner.
