Bag the Resolutions- Get a Vision and a plan

by Gina Parris

My youngest son sat on the couch this morning with me and asked,

"Mama, did you make any New Year's Resolutions?"

"Only one," I answered.

He looked at me quizzically, "What was that?"

With a smile I said, "To give up any resolutions and simply be
RESOLUTE!"

"Hmmm," he nodded. "I don't know what that means."

"It means that instead of striving to do something different, I
simply make up my mind that I will accomplish certain things this
year because of who I am."

We spent the next few minutes talking about how he would join the
Civil Air Patrol after his birthday next month, to prepare him
for his career as a Pilot. Then we decided how many belts
we would both like to promote in our Karate program. He was thinking
of how many levels of Black Belt he might accomplish by the time
he heads off to the Air Force Academy. Then it was time to leave
for the sixth grade.

The Power of Vision

Have you ever talked to people who actually made their dream
livelihood come true? This year I was inspired by a magician, an MLB
baseball player, an ice skater, a firefighter and a certain
entrepreneur.

Why? Because each one told of a childhood memory of SEEING someone
doing their craft, and saying "I'm going to do THAT!"

The magician has his hero's original costume now in his own museum.

The baseball player recently pitched in the world series for the
Giants, where he had once told his dad on vacation, "I'm going to
play here some day!"

The ice skater said, "Some day I will be in the Ice Capades!" and
she was. She now manages other figure skaters and has built a
skating empire.

The firefighter had climbed on a fire-truck during a school
presentation and knew that he would grow up to work for that very
department.  He recently gave a moving speech to the community about
their fire safety program.

The entrepreneur often stood in front of a make-believe classroom
of learners. Today she teaches thousands to make a difference via
the internet.

Some of these people seemed enviably on track their whole lives. But
not all.

Some people take the looooong way to get back in touch with the
dreams they had as children. But what does it matter in the end?
What matters is that you find your voice, your mission, your game.

When we are children and get a glimpse of what we really want to
do, it's almost like REMEMBERING instead of just dreaming. It is
a flash into the right place in a different dimension. For a moment,
you remember your perfect future.

I don't know if you've ever seen The Legend Of Baggar Vance. But
as a quirky mysterious golfer, the sage Will Smith says at the end,

"Inside each and every one of us is our one true, authentic swing.
Something we was born with. Something that is ours and ours alone.
Something that can't be learned…something that got to be remembered."

Today I hope for you the chance to remember your perfect future.
Take time to dream without limits. Become like a little child and
enter that supernatural kingdom.

After that, you can get excited about setting goals that will get
you there. It takes both – a vision and a plan.

If you want to clarify a plan than I recommend the Hundred Day
Challenge by Gary Ryan Blair. He will give you resources to outline
five specific goals, 3 reasons why you want to accomplish them, and
a structure to hold yourself accountable to the actions and dates
that can assure you reach them faster than you would on your own.

You can find out more about that here:
START FAST FINISH STRONG

In the meantime, keep playing to win, enjoy your game and get
quiet enough to see your perfect outcome.

I'll be right here,

In your corner!

Gina

Gina,
I’ve lived by this sort of idea for a while. I hate the thought of New Year’s Resolutions. Why not fix things any other day?

I also wanted to tell you that my brother started karate in the 5th grade and he got his fourth degree blackbelt last fall. He has mild cerebral palsy but he kept working after it. He also just graduated from the police academy and I really believe his karate helped him develop the discipline to do it well.

Erica! That is so inspiring about your brother. Matthew is not naturally the more athletic twin but he is tenacious. I am also convinced that he is RESOLUTE. Thanks for sharing that.

Gina, I love this approach.

Resolve to do better and be resolute in your approach – the resolution is nothing on it’s own. Cheers & Let the adventures begin . . .

Disclaimer- I’m a guy and I really like football. I just watched a Tim Tebow special and was amazed at his determination to play with the big boys. He was resolute- wow. It was an affirmation of a vision I had just before the New Year. I’m done with playing defense- with playing on my heels and reacting to life. I’m now on my toes, i’m leaning forward, I’m making the plays-not reacting to them. It is a total game changer. I’m not sure if anyone would notice from the outside but my perspective and motivation are WAY better. The parallel idea is that I’m the QB, I still need coaches and an owner 🙂
Ready? Break!

Aaah, that’s great, J! Tebow is one inspiring guy and I admire him too. I applaud you for your internal shift. I feel something similar. I love that part about needing coaches and an owner! Haha! They’ll find you.

🙂 Love the idea of ‘resolving’ to be who you are meant to be. I’m sort of noncommittal about resolutions (as we’ve talked about). They are not right for everyone, but for some of us the psychological idea of having a clean slate is powerful and hey, it that works for you…go for it!

I love your examples and analogies..you have a lovely gift for creating images with your writing!

Let’s totally rock this year though, ok;-)

xo,
Danielle

Interesting post – thanks. Since I am a person with a vision – revolutionize relationships on planet Earth and a plan to do so – I agree with not having resolutions of that sort. I did resolve to wear more jewelry and make up more often because I love how it makes me feel :). Last year, it was getting regular manicures. I am fine with those type of changes at the new year but because I believe in growing and challenging myself always – New Year is reserved for the cosmetic 🙂

Oh Denise – great idea! You have me inspired now. Change of plans: I am resolving to get a professional massage at least every other Friday from now on! Hmmm, yes – I think I can live with this one! Thanks so much for posting. Also, keep reaching out. God has big things for you.
