Fearless Goal-Setting

Fearless Goal Setting

Have you ever set a goal and immediately given up it because it seemed too big for you, too grand, or too impossible? Some goals don't inspire our necessary action because they are too daunting. Others are too boring. How do we set a goal in the first place? How do we know where we are going?

In response to this series on  "Going Fearless," this comment came in from one of our readers. This is what Steve Borgman says,

"I like this series of posts, Gina.  I would agree that knowing where we are going is part of the equation.  But the other part of the equation is pushing through fear to create a destination that truly stretches us.  Sometimes we have limiting beliefs about ourselves, our abilities, and our worth.  That's what I am always working on :)"

Now, Steve is actually a pretty inspiring fellow himself, but I was completely struck by his honesty. He is talking about knowing where we are going, or setting the right goal even with our self-doubts. Can you relate to his observation too? I sure can!

At the risk of sounding pithy, lets create a four step formula for fearless goal setting.

1. Permission to Dream!

At this point, all you're doing is dreaming. Give yourself permission to finish this sentence, "Wouldn't it be nice if…."

Choose to silence the voices that say it's impossible, or that you are unworthy.  Just start with things that genuinely interest YOU. If you are honest with your desires, than you will find dreams that are unique to you. Ask, what would you want your life to really look like if you had no limits?

I know a top real estate broker who says in the beginning before he even had his real estate license he would look at the loveliest houses in his town and say, "Wouldn't it be nice to be the one listing and selling these big homes?"

You too, can take off all the pressure and create a goal by starting with a dream.

2. Pal Around With People Who DO.

So many of our limiting beliefs come from the people around us. Their limits become our limits.  In contrast, there is amazing power in having real friends who have already accomplished your dreams. When you become friends with achievers, you eventually find some people who are no different than you! You start to say, "Wow, if they can do it, I can do it for sure!"

How do you meet these people? Join the associations and clubs where they congregate. Don't worry – you WILL fit in just fine. You have a common bond already by your interests.

3. Plan For Small Victories

Let's say you have a dream to run the Boston Marathon, but you are currently overweight and out of shape.  It would be easy to give up on that dream because it is so big. But you could find another very committed friend and plan to run a 5K in a few months. Just finishing that run will be a victory and start feeding your fearless and victorious self-image. That will naturally lead to fearless goal setting towards bigger and bigger dreams.

4. Praise Your Progress

The beauty of goal-setting and getting, is not just in the finished goal. The exciting thing is seeing the person you become along the way. You can feel great now, as if your goal is already accomplished, by celebrating each tiny step you take towards its fulfillment.  Praise is empowering. Progress is fulfilling. Acknowledge your progress, even in the small things, and soon you'll achieve dreams that seemed impossible.

I like to read biographies of successful people I admire. Every one of them had fears and challenges they had to overcome (often they were much greater than anything I will ever be faced with) and it serves as a constant reminder of what is possible when you commit to your goal.

I love reading biographies of successful people too! That's one way to live out step two: Pal Around with People Who Do! We really do become like the company we keep – even when SOME of that company is through books, blogs, programs, seminars, and even certain movies.

Oooh, I really like that idea Gina. Pal-ing around with successful people through their biographies, other books, content or products. I thought of the Jim Rohn quote, โ€œYou are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,โ€ when I read No. 2.

Thank you for another terrific, thought-stretching post my friend.

Gina, I'm honored to be part of this post. I speak as one who continuously needs to challenge my self-limiting beliefs. Hanging out with online mentors like yourself and others has gone a long way in helping me replace those beliefs with more empowering and self-stretching ones.

I love this Scripture from Ephesians 3:20:

Now to the One who can do infinitely more than all we can ask or imagine according to the power that is working among us-

Yeah, Steve – you are THE MAN! Thanks for your kind words and for reminding me of such a great promise. “…infinitely more than all we can ask or imagine…” What if it weren't about our own abilities at all?

Thanks, Gina! On the other hand, we have a responsibility to develop our own talents: as per the parable of the talents: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+25%3A14-30&version=NIV

So, the big picture is: we have a responsibility to develop our talents, not hide them, but with the understanding that it's for His glory. And to be encouraged by the power of the Spirit at work within us ๐Ÿ™‚

Thats why I pal around with you, Gina! Just this morning that haunting question was posted on FB:” What would you do if you knew you would not fail?” It's not a natural way for me to think so it's very stretching…but good! Thanks for the supporting tips. Palling (sp?) is a good thing ๐Ÿ™‚ – J

Hey Gina,

Love the refresher on goals – sometimes you get so caught up in trying to achieve them, and take them for granted, that you put them to the side, and don't remember the power of looking at and reading them frequently, saying them out loud with passion, being around people who encourage and facilitate the results you want, celebrating its small and step-by-step victories, and feel its power coursing through your veins. It's all mental, and it's all possible!

Hey G~

I love how you've broken away from the traditional information that is usually given on goal setting. While the mechanics (SMART) are important, even more important is understanding the WHY of goals and uncovering our motivations to make the goal not only attainable, but also challenging without being overwhelming!

Awesome thoughts!
